Girl in red has brought her flair to A24‘s Everyone’s Getting Involved Talking Heads tribute album. The enigmatic songstress covered “Girlfriend Is Better” for the stacked compilation album which includes Miley Cyrus, Teezo Touchdown, Lorde, Kevin Abstract, Toro y Moi and many, many others – and marks A24’s first official foray into the music sphere. The album comes in celebration of the recent re-release of Jonathan Demme’s iconic concert film Stop Making Sense, and is designed to both introduce a new generation of fans to Talking Heads’ music, as well as offer a new interpretation of their tracks for longtime fans. The Canadian artist's first live album, recorded during two November 2022 concerts in LA and released digitally last year, becomes available on a physical format (3 LPs).

More than 380 special releases will be available on Saturday, including new releases and reissues from a variety of artists spanning Ernest Tubb to 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne. There's also releases from Elton John, Gorillaz, Kristin Hersh, Parliament, Pearl Jam, Sabrina Carpenter and The Who. The first track from the compilation to be released was Paramore’s version of ‘Burning Down the House’ on January 31. That was the pop-punk band’s first new release since they wiped all of their social media accounts clean, leading to rumours of a split. On Wednesday, the 40th anniversary of the Talking Heads‘ premiere for Stop Making Sense, A24 Music dropped Girl in Red’s cover of “Girlfriend is Better.” The company also revealed the 16-song track list for the tribute project and its release date, May 17.

The first single to be released from the band’s fifth studio album, Speaking in Tongues, ‘Burning Down The House’ is a synth-heavy dance track with clear influences of funk and early hip-hop. Its eclectic sound, coupled with Byrne’s signature vocal performance, make it one of the more memorable tracks from Speaking in Tongues. The inspiration behind the track came from Parliament-Funkadelic, the music collective that pioneered psychedelic funk and paved the way for the West Coast hip-hop sound. LP, girl in red infused the iconic track with her signature playfulness and persona. “Talking Heads is an iconic band that helped define my identity when I was a teenager and they continue to inspire young people all around the world,” she said in a statement.

Questlove will host the band Q&A and The Linda Lindas will be on hand to perform their cover of “Found a Job” from Everyone’s Getting Involved.

The record will feature 16 artists sharing their own covers of Talking Heads classics – including the already released Lorde version of ‘Take Me to the River’, which Talking Heads themselves covered in 1978, from the 1974 original by Al Green. The song provided Talking Heads with their highest charting single in the US, cementing them as mainstream musical icons who had transcended their CBGB punk upbringing. Although ‘Burning Down the House’ failed to perform as successfully elsewhere in the world, it nevertheless remains one of Talking Heads’ most recognisable and well-loved tracks. "Burning Down the House" is a song by new wave band Talking Heads, released in July 1983 as the first single from their fifth studio album Speaking in Tongues. The singer-songwriter's latest, "Fu##in' Up" is a reimaging of some past Young classics with a Crazy Horse lineup that includes Micah Nelson. The Record Store Day limited edition comes on two clear vinyl LPs with a lithograph of the album cover art.

The singer also spoke to NME as part of the In Conversation series ahead of the release, where she recalled the inspiration behind the LP. “I feel like on this album, I just want to have fun and I just want to do things because they’re fun,” she said.
“Burning Down the House,” with lyrics by Talking Heads frontman David Byrne, was the best-selling single the band ever had, and was proof that a great lyric is in the ear of the listener. The song purportedly evolved from a jam by the husband-and-wife rhythm section of Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz, with Byrne coming up with syllables and phrases that fit the rhythm of the song, finally deciding on something resembling verses. A bunch of verses, sung to two different rhythms and two slightly different sets of chord changes.
The Blu-ray is out May 8, and to celebrate, Talking Heads are presenting special “A Night of Stop Making Sense” screening events in NYC and L.A. The track was available as an “extremely limited” 12” vinyl release for the annual event, with Paramore’s version of ‘Burning Down the House’ on the B-side. “Burning Down the House” has been covered by popular and respected acts like Bonnie Raitt and John Legend. So obviously what some might consider gibberish is also considered a serious piece of music that’s worthy of recognition. It’s a song that’s been around for over 33 years, and shows no signs of going away. Songwriters strive to create lyrics that will have a lasting impact for generations, such as the words to songs like Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” or Paul Simon’s “Bridge over Troubled Water” for instance.

Welsh singer Tom Jones recorded a version of "Burning Down the House" with Swedish pop band the Cardigans for his 1999 collaborations album, Reload. In common with the other tracks on the album, the recording was made with the collaborators' choice of producer and studio, in this case Tore Johansson and Tambourine Studios in Malmö, Sweden. The video, produced and directed by Byrne, alternates primarily between footage of the band performing the song in an empty ballroom, Byrne playing while facing a projection screen that displays a concert crowd or a wall of flames at different times, and images projected on the outside wall of a house. A young boy resembling Byrne takes his place from time to time; eventually, younger counterparts start moving the arms of all four band members to play the music.
After the screen goes blank, both young and adult Byrne leave the stage, and the video ends with an extended close-up of Byrne's face projected on a highway at night. The Los Angeles event happens June 4 at Hollywood Pantages Theatre which is where the Stop Making Sense concerts happened. Fred Armisen is hosting a Q&A with Talking Heads, who will take audience questions too, and Blondshell will perform their cover of “Thank Your For Sending Me an Angel” from the Everyone’s Getting Involved tribute album (out May 17). The single was backed with Jones' live recordings of the EMF song "Unbelievable" and the Beatles' "Come Together", as well as remixes of "Burning Down the House" by Delakota, Pepe Deluxé and DJ Scissorkicks.
